South Yorkshire Police (Head of Submissions)

“MD5 and their staff have always provided an excellent service and frequently have gone the extra mile when expertise was required urgently. During the time we have worked together it has been noticeable that they have always kept pace with new developments, even those I that I can't even begin to understand. I can see no reason why our long working relationship should not continue.”

Devon & Cornwall Police

MD5 received a call from a senior investigating officer at Devon & Cornwall Constabulary in relation to the examination of a mobile phone. The phone had been found inside a fire damaged vehicle forming part of a murder enquiry.

Upon receiving the exhibit at MD5 it was clear the handset had been severely damaged. The SIM card is just visible as a melted white streak amongst the burnt black plastic casing. The screen, keypad and communications port were beyond repair, it was not possible to power up the handset.

MD5 were able to conduct a ‘chip removal’ examination by recovering data directly from the chip. The data was then decoded and passed back to the officer in charge to review the information. The report proved extremely important in identifying the phone as belonging to the victim. The police officer in charge of the case added “It was very useful for us in identifying the mobile phone number and the owners address book in order to ascertain other potential witnesses.”

A UK Police Force

In a recent murder investigation information came to light that incriminating evidence in the form of text messages was stored on a suspect's Samsung Mobile Phone. A Forensics company examined the handset and failed to find any text messages. Using our specialised hardware and software we were able to recover over 52,000 deleted text messages including a text message which proved vital in the subsequent trial.
